At Scout24, we believe reliability must be taken into consideration early and often by product managers and engineers alike. We're looking for a passionate Staff Engineer, Site Reliability to spearhead our reliability program across the organization and drive a culture where reliability is embedded in our engineering DNA. We recognize that achieving true reliability requires a holistic approach that goes beyond isolated mitigations. It involves coordinating efforts across engineering, product, customer care, and other departments to create a comprehensive reliability strategy that addresses both technical and operational aspects of our services.
As a member of our Staff Engineering Group, you'll be a technical leader with company-wide influence, responsible for shaping Scout24's engineering culture and driving initiatives at the organizational level while bringing the reliability perspective to strategic decisions. You'll collaborate closely with our Platform teams to build the tools that enable reliability excellence and play a pivotal role in supporting the company to achieve its reliability goals across all core use-cases of our real-estate ecosystem. How your role will look like:
Reliability & Observability Strategy
- Research, engineer and experiment with new ways to improve our observability platform and tooling
- Design and implement a comprehensive reliability strategy that aligns with business outcomes
- Lead the definition of reliability targets (SLOs) that enable teams to make data-driven decisions
- Guide the technical roadmap for reliability and observability across Scout24
- Advocate for reliability and resiliency as essential components of our product development cycle
- Report key reliability KPIs and metrics to leadership, providing actionable insights on system health and reliability trends
Incident Management Leadership
- Own and continuously improve our incident handling processes and automation
- Foster a blameless culture of learning from incidents across the company
- Lead the definition and implementation of our disaster recovery framework in the cloud
Platform & Tooling Collaboration
- Partner with Platform teams to build observability and reliability tooling
- Foster relationships with product teams to identify pain points and provide impactful solutions
- Help design and implement monitoring solutions that give teams visibility into their systems
- Understands budgeting and financial performance of vendors and tools
- Experience working with vendors to develop business and technical relationship
- Lead larger projects with uncertainty and risk, guiding other engineers assigned to your projects
Cultural Transformation & Strategic Leadership
- Help teams understand the reliability of their services and how they can improve it
- Provide technical leadership on reliability to engineers, managers, and product managers
- Raise awareness about how unreliable products can lead to financial or reputational loss
- Support our "you build it you run it" model by mentoring teams on operating resilient systems
- Drive engineering initiatives at the organizational level, representing the reliability perspective in strategic decisions
- Foster cross-departmental collaboration between engineering, product, customer care, and other teams to create a holistic approach to reliability
- Partner with your PM and engineering manager, keeping them informed with technical details across multiple projects
- Set new standards of excellence and drive the platform forward with ideas that maintain quality, reliability, security, and performance
What you need to succeed:
- Significant experience in software engineering with scalable distributed systems (around 8 years preferred, but we value skills over strict timelines)
- Strong SRE background with deep understanding of SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and observability
- Platform engineering/DevOps expertise and passion for monitoring distributed systems
- Experience with incident management, post-incident analysis, and organizational change
- Experience leveraging AI tools to drive problem-solving and productivity, maintaining effective human oversight and judgement.
- Data-driven mindset that uses metrics to evaluate engineering decisions
- Technical leadership experience including mentoring, pair programming, and solution design
- Ability to balance strategic vision with tactical implementation
- Excellent communication skills to translate technical concepts across various stakeholders
- Growth mindset with strong cross-functional collaboration abilities
- Excellent written and spoken English
